Starting our journey to become single-use, litter free.
Our Pre School has begun it's journey on becoming 'Plastic Free' with the support of Surfers Against Sewage and the help of all the staff, parents and carers. We passionately believe in educating and empowering the next generation to be confident in protecting the planet.
Surfers Against Sewage was set up by people who were sick of seeing sewage in our seas and on our beaches in the 1980’s and 1990’s, and were fed up of getting ill when doing the sports they loved – surfing, sea swimming, windsurfing and anything else that involved being in the sea. The Pre-School staff were inspired to join the movement that has built a community through education, volunteering, beach cleans, campaigns, parliamentary events and advocacy to create the change we want for our Pre-Schoolers for the future, The Pre-School has joined a community of over 300,000 people.
We were lucky to be sent many pairs of child-sized durable litter collecting gloves and strong litter bags, with parent donation we brought a child sized litter pick.. then we were off!
We assembled a little focus group of Eco Warriors and s
at on the Tye in Alfriston and we talked through the reasons for reducing plastic and picking up litter. The children identified ideas such as "I know let's make things from old cardboard" and “the poor animals in the sea might get plastic stuck and can't breathe".
The children led the way around the Tye identifying litter, and the children had a think about common pieces and patterns in what we saw. Next, we built on this and had a think about solutions. Finally, we collected our gloves and bag and went round the village collecting litter. All the litter we collected has been recycled or disposed of.
After seeing our mission on Facebook, local eco company Cheeky Wipes, who this year won the Queens Awards for Enterprise in the Sustainability have donated over 10 sample packs of reusable face and bottom wipes for our families to try out on their children (and themselves!) The Cheeky Wipe team are passionate about providing ‘simple reusables’ which are alternatives to single use products (which create landfill and destroy our planet's resources). Cheeky Wipes provide single use solution for all stages of life from nappies to incontinence pants to make up wipes.
We are so excited to be starting our journey with these 2 experienced eco companies and we hope to instil a habit in our children of looking after the planet.
